Route description

This tour lets you discover the Massif du Sancy from all angles, with a mountain route at over 1000 m altitude.

Departing from the medieval town of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, we take small roads to reach the sumptuous Lac Pavin, an almost circular volcanic explosion crater 96 m deep, at an altitude of 1197 m… It’s one of the most beautiful lakes in Auvergne !

Step 1 : Depart from the medieval town of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise and take the back roads to reach the sumptuous Lac Pavin, a 96 m-deep volcanic explosion crater at an altitude of 1197 m, almost circular in shape… It’s one of the most beautiful lakes in Auvergne !

Step 2 : Continue directly to Picherande through wild landscapes, between the Monts Dore and the Artense plateau.

Step 3 : You’ll then come to La Tour d’Auvergne and its lake, popular in summer for a dip.

Step 4 : Then on to Le Mont-Dore, which owes its reputation to the purity of its air, its thermal waters and the quality of its ski area.

Next step

Step 5 : Finally, you reach Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise via Lac de Chambon and the Chaudefour valley, one of the three glacial valleys of the Massif du Sancy. It’s renowned for its alpine flora and its two sharp dykes (Dent de la Rancune and Crête du Coq).

Approx. 3 hrs 55 min at an average speed of 20 km/h.
