Route description

A short loop through typical Combrailles countryside. The route winds through undergrowth to the dam reservoir and offers a fine view of the Sioule gorges from Grand Motaillas.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, descendre la rue du Bourg et la suivre en tournant à gauche. Au carrefour en T, prendre à droite la route vers la Pradelle.
À l’entrée du hameau, bifurquer à gauche, puis monter jusqu’à un carrefour (vue sur le village de Vitrac). Tourner à gauche puis rapidement à droite (panneau d’information sur le méandre de Queuille) et descendre un large chemin dans la forêt. Ignorer un chemin à droite et parvenir à un gros bloc rocheux sur la droite (de son sommet – ascension délicate – vue sur la vallée de la Sioule). Poursuivre la descente sur le chemin principal, en ignorant les chemins latéraux jusqu’au passage sous une ligne électrique haute tension.

Step 2 : À la fourche, monter à gauche un chemin en surplomb de la Sioule. À la première maison abandonnée, monter à gauche pour rejoindre une route. Aller à gauche. Dans le troisième virage en épingle, à la croix, franchir à droite une première clôture puis plus loin une deuxième. Traverser un ruisseau et monter en lacets vers Vitrac. Juste après avoir traversé le premier groupe de maisons de Vitrac, prendre à droite un chemin conduisant au parking.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Manzat (30 km northwest of Clermont-Ferrand), follow the D227 then the D19 towards Saint Georges-de-Mons. Turn right onto the D414 to Vitrac. Parking lot after the church.
