Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the start sign, head for the information point. Turn right before the restaurant and cross the grassy area. Turn right onto a wide track. Just before the road, go left for 50 m and turn right. At the fork, take the wide grassy path on the left until you reach a carriage road (signposted Chambourguet sud).

Step 2 : Fork right and, after approx. 200 m, take a left-hand path through the woods. Go straight up. At the edge of the wood, turn left, then go over a ladder to reach the summit of the puy de Chambourguet (ski lift arrival point) (6 mins AR, continuing straight ahead on the ridge, with views of the Banne d’Ordanche, the Sancy and the Cantal). Continue right across the meadow, for 80 m, to the large rock before the concrete blocks.

Step 3 : Descend to the right to reach a wide path entering the forest. Pass a ladder and continue downhill, keeping to the right until you reach a gravel path. Turn left for 10 m, then right on a wide track to a crossroads. Follow the road towards La Tour d’Auvergne. Shortly after the parking lot, turn right onto a track. Go through a fence, cross the meadow (viewpoint), skirt the edge of the forest, then descend on a wide track leading to a road. 250 m after a telephone pylon, turn right, cross a fence and walk along the edge of the wood to a stepladder.

Step 4 : Cross the stepladder and immediately take the downhill path to the left (view of La Tour d’Auvergne). At the end of the pasture, go through the fence and down to the left as far as a road junction. Go straight ahead on the road towards La Tour d’Auvergne for 350 m. Climb left to the foirail (30 m : basalt pavement over the foirail), then left to Cloux. Go past a cross and down the road for 60 m. Turn right onto a grassy path. At the white cross, turn left down to a road. Cross the road and take the grassy path below. The path, on a balcony over a road, joins a street that leads directly down to the lake (picnic area). After the tennis court, turn right along the lake shore. Walk up to the houses and follow the path to the left. At the fork 50 m before the dike, turn right to reach the Saint-Pardoux church square (listed church).

Next step

Step 5 : Go around the church. At the cross, go straight up. Cross the D203 and take the track opposite. At the first crossroads, turn left and continue, ignoring the track on your left. You reach a small tarmac road which you follow through the hamlet of Longechaud to the D129, which you cross. At the hamlet of La Roche, continue left along the wide track (with views of the Limousin and the Chavanon viaduct), which quickly enters the forest. At the first crossroads, go straight ahead and follow the forest road. At the next two intersections, keep left. Ignore the paths on the left and continue to the starting point.
