Route description

A pleasant route from Riom to the beautiful spa town of Châtel-Guyon. This original circuit follows the route of the “Thermal Express”, the train that took spa-goers from Riom to the spa town from 1912 to 1971.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Traverser la route et prendre à gauche le « Chemin sous le Stade ». Suivre le « Thermal Express » jusqu’à une bifurcation située juste avant le deuxième pont.

Step 2 : S’engager sur la montée à droite, et, au pont, emprunter le premier chemin à droite. Au croisement, aller à gauche, longer un champ en passant sous la ligne haute tension. Après le champ, poursuivre tout droit. À la fourche, descendre à droite. Continuer tout droit en ignorant les chemins latéraux. 150m après une zone de stockage de graviers, monter le chemin à droite jusqu’à un carrefour de chemins carrossables, au sommet de la côte.

Step 3 : Tourner à gauche et rester sur le chemin à flanc (PV1 vue sur St-Hippolyte et le Puy de Dôme). À la route, aller à droite et, au stop, à gauche rue du Lac, puis tourner à droite (Rue de Bellevue). Continuer tout droit dans l’impasse du Chalusset. Poursuivre à droite et passer sous la station de pompage. Descendre (PV2 vue sur Châtel-Guyon) jusqu’au ruisseau.

Step 4 : Traverser sur le pont, tourner à droite et longer les commerces. Passer entre le Casino et les Thermes. À la route tourner à gauche, puis, à droite. Longer le ruisseau rive droite. À la fourche prendre à droite. À la piste carrossable, se diriger à gauche, au carrefour, aller à gauche puis à droite Avenue de l’Europe. Rejoindre le point de départ.

Access

Reach Châtel-Guyon (21 km north of Clermont-Ferrand) via Riom, then the D985B. On entering Châtel-Guyon, park in the skatepark parking lot after the campsite. Start sign at the edge of the skatepark.
