Departing from Ambert, this route quickly rises into the foothills of the Livradois. The initial climb immediately sets the tone : a sustained ascent winding through meadows and woods, gradually offering beautiful views over the Dore valley. This demanding first section is amply rewarded by the wilderness and calm of the heights.
Once on the ridges, the route becomes more gentle and follows the Livradois hillsides on a balcony. You can then look out over the Forez mountains, with the emblematic summit of Pierre-sur-Haute in your sights. The paths alternate between shady forest tracks and open stretches where you can take full advantage of the panoramic views.
The end of the route plunges steadily down towards Ambert on a succession of fast, playful paths between forests and clearings. The descent offers a nice contrast to the initial climb, and brings the loop to a pleasant, flowing conclusion.
Why we love this circuit :
– A physical climb that sets the mood right from the start
– Balcony paths with superb panoramic views ✨
– Views of the Forez mountains and Pierre-sur-Haute
– A playful final descent to Ambert
– Immersion in the unspoilt landscapes of the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park ☘️
Approx. 25 km with over 600 m of ascent, on a loop considered difficult, culminating at an altitude of almost 900 m.
