A lovely walk in the heart of the Combrailles and its landscapes of hills, hollows, valleys, hedges, copses and ponds typical of this part of the region. Beautiful views of the Chaîne des Puys, the Limagne and the Bois-Noirs.
Step 1 : From the start sign on the parking lot (horseshoeing loom), head straight ahead on a wide track. At the T-junction, turn left onto a gravel path. Ignore the side paths, pass the pond. At the fork in the road (100 m), go left, then straight ahead on the main road until you reach the D122 near Gourlanges.
Step 2 : Follow the road opposite for 100 m, then take the left-hand path (with views of Puy de Dôme and Puy de Pariou). Turn left onto the first track which, at the corner of a meadow, leads down into the woods to a T-junction. Turn right. Stay on the main path through the Bois du Faux, overlooking the reservoir. At the fork, turn left towards the Sep dam. Follow the path to the road.
Step 3 : Turn left over the dam (views of the reservoir and the Sep valley) and follow the reservoir closely for over 2 km. Turn left at the fork after the invert. Cross the Sep at a distance of 20 m via a wire-mesh footbridge. Follow the footpath to the left as far as the La Faye signpost.
Step 4 : Take the right-hand path for 50 m to the junction of four paths in the Merlanche woods. Take the third, clockwise, between two gated forest paths. At the next crossroads, head in the opposite direction. Turn right at the fork 15 m ahead. Ignore the side paths until you reach the D50, which leads back to the starting point on the left.
