Route description

This walk reveals the charms of unspoilt countryside on the edge of the Creuse department in the ‘Land of Ponds’ : no fewer than four ponds are served by the trail.

Trail highlights

– Church and cross.
– Vernet pond.
– Alternating forests, pastures and ponds illustrate a landscape maintained by human activity. It’s also a pleasant landscape to stroll through under the foliage of the trees so characteristic of the Haute Combraille. The church of La Celle (XIII) features a combed bell tower.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Face au panneau départ, prendre la route de Chalus. Laisser un chemin
à gauche. Poursuivre sur la route et à mi-côte, aller à droite sur un chemin enherbé jusqu’à une intersection en haut de la côte.

Step 2 : Virer sur le chemin à gauche et atteindre une route. La suivre à droite. A l’entrée de Chalus, juste avant la première maison, prendre un chemin à droite puis continuer à droite sur la route. Au croisement routier, se diriger sur la route à gauche. Au « Cédez le passage », traverser une route et descendre un chemin en face toujours tout droit. Passer sur la digue d’un étang et poursuivre directement jusqu’à une route. La suivre à droite jusqu’au niveau d’une maison sur la gauche.

Step 3 : Emprunter le chemin à gauche. Longer un étang. A l’intersection, aller à gauche. A l’embranchement suivant, monter le chemin à droite. Sur le plat, laisser un chemin à gauche. A l’intersection en T, descendre à droite. A la maison, continuer à droite puis, aussitôt, virer sur le chemin à gauche. Longer l’étang du Vernet puis passer sur la digue. Monter le chemin carrossable sur 40m puis à l’intersection continuer la montée. En haut de la côte(point1), descendre le chemin en face puis suivre la route à gauche pour rejoindre le point de départ.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Pontaumur, follow the D941 towards Aubusson. At Saint-Avit, turn left on the D13 towards Giat, then right on the D582 to La Celle. Parking on place de l’église.
