Route description

A pleasant trail that leads through beech woods but is mainly open country with wide views over the Combrailles. The heritage is concentrated in the village of Saint-Hilaire-les-Monges : church, biface cross, well, wash-house, etc.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ (église romane), descendre à droite une petite route qui se transforme en chemin entre deux haies (vue sur les Combrailles). À une fourche, rester sur le sentier de droite. Passer le fond du vallon et, au croisement, prendre le chemin à droite et remonter jusqu’à une route.

Step 2 : L’emprunter à droite sur 200 m. et à la deuxième bifurcation (croix), tourner à gauche et poursuivre tout droit. Ignorer un chemin à gauche et longer la lisière du bois. À l’intersection, traverser la route et prendre en face la direction Les Rouchons. Continuer sur cette route dans la forêt jusqu’à un étang.

Step 3 : Quitter la route, monter à droite dans la forêt et suivre le chemin principal. À la sortie du bois, tourner à gauche sur une petite route (vue sur la butte de Puy-Saint-Gulmier et le clocher terrasse de l’église) et au carrefour, aller à droite, passer près d’une croix (1670) et rejoindre le parking.

Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Pontaumur (west of Clermont-Ferrand), follow the D987 towards Herment for 7 km, then turn left onto the D572. Reach Saint-Hilaire-les-Monges.
The starting sign is on the church square.
