Route description

This is THE Cézallier. Inconsistent bumps swell the huge green carpet, sometimes peeled and yellow, sometimes spiked with coniferous trees. The lakes of La Godivelle, the meanders of the couze d’Ardes in glacial valleys… the great calm !

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the start sign on the D32 opposite La Godivelle town hall, stay on the main road, pass the cemetery (view of the Sancy massif) and continue for 500m on the road until you reach an intersection with a track on the left.

Step 2 : Go downhill, cross a footbridge and turn right into the woods. At the end of the wood, continue straight ahead. At the crossroads, turn left. At the next intersection, turn right along a wide, stony track. At the T-junction, turn right. In Brion, just before the road, turn right up the track. Cross the road, go straight ahead. At the crow’s-foot (gite d’étape), turn right. At the main road, turn right between the houses until you reach a T-junction.

Step 3 : Cross the road and go straight ahead on a path between 2 fences (off the circuit :- 20 mins AR – go up the road to the right to reach the foirail and then the top of the Brion motte, panoramic view). At the T-junction, turn right, then immediately left. At a road, go straight up a wide track. At the T-junction, turn right. At the road, go left. At Jassy, turn right, cross the bridge and continue to the next junction.

Step 4 : Turn right onto the small road leading to Lac de St-Alyre. Cross the dike. Drive alongside the lake, then climb up to a fence which you follow to the right. Cross it on a stepladder and follow it to the left (after the 3rd stepladder, view of Godivelle and lac d’en Bas). Descend to the farm, join the road and climb left to return to the starting point.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Besse-Saint-Anastaise, follow the D36. At Compains, take the D26 towards Espinchal, then the D32 to the left, as far as La Godivelle. Parking behind the church.
