Route description

In the Middle Ages, the village community was built around the chapel. Clinging to a volcanic peak facing the Puys chain, the Dore mountains and the Cézallier plateau, Usson is classified as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”.

Starting point – Take the direction of Coupe-Gorge and then turn left towards Solignat. In Solignat leave the asphalt road and go down to the left to reach a crossroads planted with a chestnut tree in La Chapelle-sur-Usson (Romanesque church Saint-Julien ; panorama on the Cézallier mountains).

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the start sign, go to the traffic circle and take the path under the house (view of the Monts du Cézallier). Go as far as the wash-house at the crossroads at the entrance to Perrier.

Step 2 : Turn right onto the asphalt road into the village. 10m before the watering place on the left, turn right down a tarmac road. At the water treatment plant, continue downhill to the right and cross a bridge over a stream to go back up to the asphalt road (D703).

Step 3 : Turn right for approx. 700 m. Go left up a wide path which joins a tarmac road. Follow this to the right for 100 metres until you reach the D703.

Step 4 : Cross it and go down a grassy path (Viewpoint). Turn left at an old well. At Les Martres, cross a tarmac road to go straight ahead. -Old fountain 18810/. At the end of the village, fork right onto a track below the D75 road. Take the asphalt track on the right, then the first track on the left to reach the starting point.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

At Issoire, leave the freeway at exit 13. Take the D996 towards Parentignat, then the D999 towards Le-Vernet-la-Varenne. In Sarpoil, turn right onto D214, then after Banzat turn left onto D24, direction La Chapelle-sur-Usson.
