Route description

Château de Ravel (1147), a powerful, perfectly preserved medieval fortress, with its 13th-century keep and 5 towers, one of which is octagonal, was embellished at the end of the 18th century. From the terrace, views of the Chaîne des Puys and Monts Dore.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du parking du château de Ravel, emprunter la route à droite pour rejoindre le hameau de la Morille. À l’entrée du hameau, descendre à droite (vue sur les monts du Forez en face, le château de Mauzun au premier plan, la chaîne des Puys et les buttes de Billom à droite). À l’intersection, monter à gauche et continuer sur la rue principale pour quitter la Morille.

Step 2 : Au niveau de la dernière maison, tourner à droite et à la croix, à l’intersection, emprunter le chemin en face. À la patte d’oie, tourner à droite. Au carrefour suivant, tourner à gauche pour suivre l’allée Sabatier.

Step 3 : À la sortie du bois, à la route, continuer dans le prolongement en face. 200 m plus loin, quitter la route et tourner sur le chemin à gauche. Emprunter une sente à droite et arriver sur un chemin plus large ; tourner alors à gauche sur 20 m puis prendre tout de suite à droite. 20 m plus loin, tourner encore à gauche sur le chemin. Laisser un chemin qui part à droite et continuer en face (vue sur la chaîne des Puys et le massif du Sancy).

Step 4 : Emprunter la route à gauche et, 150 m plus loin, monter à gauche (vue sur les monts du Forez à gauche). À la ferme du Cros, prendre le chemin herbeux à droite (vue sur la chaîne des Puys à droite et la tour de Courcourt au premier plan). Rejoindre la route, l’emprunter à gauche pour revenir au château de Ravel.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.
