Route description

Château de Ravel (1147), a powerful, perfectly preserved medieval fortress, with its 13th-century keep and 5 towers, one of which is octagonal, was embellished at the end of the 18th century. From the terrace, views of the Chaîne des Puys and Monts Dore.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the Château de Ravel parking lot, take the road to the right to reach the hamlet of La Morille. At the entrance to the hamlet, turn right (view of the Monts du Forez opposite, with the Château de Mauzun in the foreground, and the Chaîne des Puys and the Buttes de Billom on the right). At the crossroads, turn left and continue along the main street to leave La Morille.

Step 2 : At the last house, turn right and, at the crossroads, take the path opposite. At the crow’s-foot, turn right. At the next crossroads, turn left into the Sabatier alley.

Step 3 : At the end of the wood, at the road, continue straight ahead. 200 m further on, leave the road and turn left onto the track. Take a right-hand path onto a wider track ; turn left for 20 m, then immediately right. After 20 m, turn left again onto the track. Leave a track on the right and continue straight ahead (view of the Chaîne des Puys and the Massif du Sancy).

Step 4 : Take the road to the left and, 150 m further on, turn left (view of the Monts du Forez on the left). At the ferme du Cros, take the grassy path on the right (view of the Chaîne des Puys on the right and the Courcourt tower in the foreground). Rejoin the road and turn left to return to Château de Ravel.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.
