Route description

At an altitude of over 700 m, surrounded by woods and water, the Dordogne plateaux offer panoramic views of the two great volcanic massifs of the Auvergne : the Monts Dore and the Cantal strato volcano.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, emprunter la route en direction de La Renaudie sur environ 2 km (vues à gauche sur la retenue du barrage de Bort-les-Orgues, puis à droite sur la Dordogne et l’ancien prieuré de Port-Dieu). À la première fourche, prendre à droite la direction de Banely. Aux premières maisons, quitter la route et emprunter à droite puis de suite à gauche un chemin qui débouche dans un pré. Longer la clôture à gauche puis suivre le chemin en face jusqu’à la route.

Step 2 : Partir à droite jusqu’au hameau La Renaudie. À la croix, continuer à gauche. Après la dernière maison (vue sur la retenue du barrage), descendre le chemin en sous-bois. Passer un premier virage en épingle à cheveux et continuer sur 100 m jusqu’au premier chemin descendant à gauche.

Step 3 : L’emprunter et rester sur ce chemin en ignorant des sentes de part et d’autre. Après un ru, remonter et continuer le chemin à flanc de coteau en surplombant le Rigaud. S’arrêter 50 m avant le ruisseau.

Step 4 : Monter à gauche une trace peu visible, puis continuer sur un sentier longeant le ruisseau. Après la passerelle, monter en face et prendre à gauche un sentier longeant encore le Rigaud. Après une autre passerelle, continuer sur le sentier en face jusqu’à une fourche.

Step 5 : Rester à droite. Monter un sentier en lacets qui devient un chemin pour atteindre le hameau le Chastel. Suivre la route à gauche pour rejoindre le point de départ.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Tauves, 65 km south-west of Clermont-Ferrand on the D922, follow signs for Bort-les-Orgues. At Quatre-Vents, turn right as far as Larodde. Continue towards Bort-les-Orgues for 100 m, then turn right towards La Renaudie until you reach a cross on a median strip.
