Route description

In the land of Rochefort ants, the Fonsalade valley immerses us in a wilderness where we discover a cliff (8 m) of fibrous beige pumice and the “Roche Branlante”, a huge block of sancyte (lava) balanced on others.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, prendre le chemin du Limbeau, passer entre les maisons puis suivre à droite le chemin de la Plane sur 1 km. Prendre à gauche un large chemin montant entre les prairies. Poursuivre jusqu’à la première maison du village Largillier.

Step 2 : Aller à droite. À la route, emprunter immédiatement le chemin à droite (vue sur les roches Tuilière et Sanadoire). Retrouver la route que l’on suit à droite jusqu’à La Gratade (Four à pain).

Step 3 : Rester sur la même route et à la fourche prendre à gauche la route de chez Chocol (vue sur les roches Tuilière et Sanadoire). Traverser tout droit le hameau par la route de la roche branlante. Après un bâtiment agricole, à l’intersection, aller à droite sur un chemin jusqu’à l’accès de « la roche branlante ».

Step 4 : Monter à droite pour accéder au site (A/R 30 min). Revenir sur le parcours initial (vue sur la chaîne des Puys ) et continuer à droite sur le chemin herbeux. À une intersection avec un chemin caillouteux, aller à droite jusqu’à la route.

Step 5 : Prendre à gauche devant la croix de la mission, rentrer dans Rochefort-Montagne, passer devant la halle puis monter à gauche la Grand Rue, puis la route du foirail pour rejoindre le départ.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

Reach Rochefort Montagne, 38 km west of Clermont-Ferrand. Cross the bridge over the village on the D2089 and, 250 m further on, turn left towards Gendarmerie / Bordas. Pass the campsite (D216). Parking lot on route de Bordas after the “Gendarmerie” sign, with a sign for the picnic area on the left.
