Route description

The Sauterre rock provides a great vantage point from which to observe the surrounding area and the majestic line-up of the Chaîne des Puys. This basalt piton, the result of volcanic activity, contains inclusions of peridotite, a semi-precious stone.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the parking lot, take the small road that climbs up alongside the cemetery. At the first junction, take the left-hand path (view of the Chaîne des Puys). Join the road and turn right for 50 m. Turn right on the first track, towards La Roche de Sauterre (signpost). Go through a gate (former quarry building) and continue up to the quarry (basalt flows).

Step 2 : Take the left-hand path through the forest to the top of Roche de Sauterre. At 20 m, on the right, there’s an orientation table (with a wide view : Monts du Livradois, Chaîne des Puys, Massif du Sancy, Artense, Combrailles). Retrace your steps and take the path along a high fence to the level of the large pylons (radio relay).

Step 3 : Take the left-hand path through the undergrowth. At the end of the wood, turn right, pass under the high-voltage power line and continue down a wide track. At the first intersection, ignore the left-hand path. At the next junction, continue straight ahead, passing under the high-voltage line again and rejoining the road. At this point, take the right-hand path which leads back to the starting point between two low dry-stone walls.

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

From Riom, follow signs for Mozac. Follow Enval on the D455 then the D138 to the village of Sauterre. Parking lot between the cemetery and the chapel.
