Route description

A signposted path along the Durolle, where generations of grinders and representatives of the cutlery guild worked, has become a Mecca for industrial museology.

Trail highlights

– The Rouets valley and its mills.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the reception building, turn left to spinning wheels nos. 1 to 10. At the crossroads, continue down to the left to reach the Durolle river and spinning wheels nos. 1, 2 and 3. Follow the path along the river to spinning wheels nos. 4 to 10. Cross the footbridge to the left of the Chez Montagnac and de la Broche spinning wheels.

Step 2 : Chez l’Ane, do not climb the stairs, but continue along the Durolle. Then pass Chez le Rouge, Chez Picot and Chez Pianti.

Step 3 : At the Chez Dumas-Miolho spinning wheel, follow the path upwards. At the crossroads, keep going up to the left and continue straight ahead to return to the starting point at the end of the Rouets Fourniot circuit – 20 mins.

Step 4 : Back at the reception building, you can extend your walk by taking the 40-minute round-trip section marked “vers rouets n°11 à 18” (towards spinning wheels n°11 to 18) on the “colline des Boules” spinning wheels circuit.

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

From Thiers, follow the D2089 towards Chabreloche. In Château-Gaillard, turn right towards the Vallée des Rouets.
