Route description

A walk at the end of the world through heaths of broom and hazel, wooded paths and valleys carved out by the Tarentaise and Eau Verte rivers. You’ll discover the remains of the Bernardines de Vassin abbey, founded on the return from the 2nd Crusades.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, remonter vers Caux, traverser le hameau et continuer jusqu’au premier chemin à droite. Le suivre jusqu’à un ru, en vue de la ferme du Mazet.

Step 2 : Prendre à droite et suivre la lisière du bois. Au chemin goudronné, partir à droite. Dépasser la retenue d’eau et continuer tout droit dans la forêt en suivant en surplomb la rive droite du ruisseau. Ignorer les chemins de part et d’autre. À la sortie du bois (ruines de l’abbaye des Bernardines), continuer jusqu’au lieu-dit le Vassin.

Step 3 : Prendre à droite le chemin goudronné. Monter en ignorant des chemins de part et d’autre jusqu’à un large chemin à droite.

Step 4 : L’emprunter entre bois et pâturages. Suivre à droite une petite route et à 100 m bifurquer encore à droite. 200 m après le pont, dans le virage, emprunter le chemin montant à gauche. Longer une clôture à main gauche, puis une haie à main droite, entre deux prés (vue sur les monts du Cantal). Rejoindre un chemin qui ramène au point de départ.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From La Tour-d’Auvergne, take the D203 for 7 km towards Picherande. Turn right onto the D88. At the Saint-Donat exit, turn right onto the D25. After “Chez le Berche”, turn left to Caux. Parking lot by the signpost at the end of the hamlet.
