Route description
This 13th-century fortress was one of the most important strongholds of its time. Its position on a volcanic mound was highly strategic. It’s an ideal family outing for the charm of the scenery and the breathtaking views.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step
Step 1 : From Place des Grolles, walk down to the market hall and follow it to the right, then turn left and continue straight ahead. At the end of Mauzun, leave the road and turn left. At the intersection, go straight ahead along a wall. At the D997 (beware of fast-moving traffic), turn left and 50 m further on, take the road on the right (towards Chabagnal). Pass to the right of the cross and continue along the track opposite.
Step 2 : Cross the D338 and go down the track opposite. Cross the D338 again and climb the track opposite to the hamlet of Les Plats (view to the left of the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy massif, the Livradois mountains, the Limagne, the Comté, Clermont-Ferrand and the Château de Mauzun). Turn right down the road (view of the Forez mountains on the left). At the T junction, turn right (towards Estandeuil). Cross Fénérol and go straight on.
Step 3 : At the Estandeuil church, turn right, pass the town hall, cross the road in the bend and take the small road on the left. At the fork, leave the road and take the path opposite. At the crow’s-foot, continue right on the main road to Champ Redon. Cross this hamlet (with views of Estandeuil and the ruined La Rochette tower) along the road to the D7.
Step 4 : Follow it to the left (view of Mauzun castle) and take the first track on the right just after the hydrant. At the road, turn left along the pond, and at the fork in the road turn right up to the hamlet of Le Pic. At the entrance to the hamlet, turn right at the communal oven, pass the first house and take the path between 2 fences (view of Mauzun château to the left). Follow this path, cross the stream and climb up to the D997.
Next step
Step 5 : Cross it (caution, poor visibility). At the entrance to the hamlet of Le Vernet, take the small road to the right, ignoring the one leading to La Micolerie. Go through the hamlet and, at the exit, turn left onto a grassy path running alongside a surrounding wall. At the end of the path, at the château gate, turn left and follow the same route to Mauzun and the start as on the outward journey.

Additional information
For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access
Go down to the market hall, follow it to the right, then turn left and continue straight on. At the end of Mauzun, leave the road and turn left. At the crossroads, go straight ahead along a wall. Turn left on the D997 and 50 m further on, turn right at the crossroads.
