Route description

In the heart of the Artense massif, this itinerary – which takes in bread ovens, calvaries, gardens and mid-mountain hamlets – leads you along a stretch of the ancient Roman road that once linked Clermont to Cantal and the Aquitaine Midi.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the start sign, pass under the arbour. At the end of the driveway, continue towards the pontoons. Cross them and fork left along the wall. Climb the stairs and follow the road to the left for 600 m until you come to a small road rising to the right (towards La Fage). Take this road and continue along a dirt track. At the first fork, turn right. At the next fork, go left. Ford a stream and join the chemin de la Reine-Margot. Turn right along the Roman road to a white cross and a water reservoir (panoramic view of the Sancy massif).

Step 2 : Turn left onto a wide hairpin path. Continue straight ahead until you reach a fork in the road, with a narrow path between low walls on the left.

Step 3 : Follow this track until it intersects with a wide path. Turn left (view of the Sancy) as far as Cornillat (at the entrance to Cornillat, an old oak tree on the right, then a bread oven 50 m to the left). Continue to the junction with the D72 (70 m to the right, Cornillat fountain). Cross the D72 and descend towards Espinasse. Cross a stream and turn left up to a road through Espinasse. Turn left for 50 m. At the end of the hamlet, turn right and follow the bread oven. Continue as far as the last house, then go right down to the intersection with a narrower track.

Step 4 : Turn left and enter the forest. Cross a small stream, then follow the larger one. At a low wall, cross the stream and turn left. At the end of the wood, keep left until you reach the road. Turn left for 50 m, then take the first track on the left. Continue immediately to the right. Cross a stream, then come to a T-junction (wooden calvary). Follow the road to the right. Take the first large dirt track on the left until you reach an intersection with a road (remarkable oak tree). Turn right onto the road through La Touraille. Shortly after a thatched cottage, leave the road and fork right onto a track. At the Calvaire du Montel, take the road to the left. After a watering place, follow a footpath to the left until you reach the D72. Turn right to return to the starting point, following the same route as the outward journey.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

In Bagnols (south-west of Clermont-Ferrand, between La Tour d’Auvergne and Bort-les-Orgues), take the D72 towards Labessette. Parking at Jardin Conservatoire Sancy-Artense, on the left as you leave the village.
