A gentle stroll along the Allier, one of Europe’s last wild rivers, a paradise for birds and fish. In bygone days, when Pont-Du-Château was a port, boatmen travelled down the river in heavily laden boats.
– View of Pont-du-Château, the château and Sainte-Martine church.
– View of the Allier and the footbridge.
– Half-timbered house.
Étape 1 : From the start sign at the corner of the playground, opposite the protected crosswalk, reach the junction of Chemin des Vortilles and Chemin de Decouville. Take the latter for 30 m. Turn left onto the path leading to the banks of the Allier. Take a staircase up to the metal footbridge. Cross over (view of Pont-du-Château, château, Sainte-Martine church). Immediately turn left onto the paved Chemin de la Plage. Leave the cycle path and follow the path to the river bank (view of the bridge). Follow the Allier to the bridge, then turn right up the asphalt road to a crossroads.
Étape 2 : Turn left, skirt the bridge and turn left onto rue de la Marine. Turn left 50 m after the hairpin bend. Without going under the bridge, take the path along the riverbank between the arch and the hedge. Turn right as far as the end of the quay, then right again to find Rue de la Marine, then right again to Rue Sous le Pont or Rue de l’Ancien Pont en Bois. Climb up to the Sainte-Martine church.
Étape 3 : Turn left down rue Sainte-Martine. Continue straight on until you reach Place Croix-Barbe. Turn right into rue Croix-Barbe, which leads to place Saint-Nicolas. Turn right into rue Côte d’Allier (view of the Allier and the footbridge). Walk up rue Côte Tranchant, ignoring the streets on your right. Continue along rue de l’Escalier. Climb the steps leading to Place de l’Aire. Walk along it and turn right into rue de la Mairie. At the crossroads, turn left into rue de la Poste (half-timbered house). After Place de la Liberté, turn left into Rue de l’Hôtel de Ville as far as Place de l’Hôtel de Ville (clock and town hall).
Étape 4 : Turn right into rue de l’Horloge, walk alongside the Alain-Rey library and emerge at the top of place Cathier. Turn right and immediately left into rue du Docteur Chambige (church). Go down rue Côte de la Mine. Follow the asphalt path through the playground to the starting point.
