Route description

The route is marked by gorges carved out by the Madet between volcanic hillocks. It offers views of the Chaîne des Puys and the heritage of the valley. You’ll discover the landscapes of a region nicknamed the “Tuscany of Auvergne”.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : At the D229, cross it and continue straight ahead ; cross the railway line and take the street immediately on the right. At the crow’s-foot, leave rue de Bursat on your right and turn left onto rue de la Salette. Go straight through the housing estate and, at the top of the hill, turn left onto the Chemin du Petit Turluron (with a view of Ravel castle in the foreground and the Forez mountains in the background). At the crow’s-foot, leave the chemin du petit Turluron on your left and continue straight ahead on the gravel path (view of Billom town). At the T junction, turn left towards Petit Turluron.

Step 2 : At the “4 chemins” crossroads, fork left (leaving the village of Petit Turluron behind). At the next crossroads (signpost : Billom, la vocation urbaine), take the path that climbs to the top of Petit Turluron to reach the Chapelle de la Salette (360° panoramic view : Clermont-Ferrand, the Limagne plain, the Comté, the town of Billom in the foreground, the Chaîne des Puys, the Monts Dômes, the Massif du Sancy, the Château de Mauzun, the Monts du Forez in the background).

Step 3 : From the Chapelle de la Salette, follow the same path back down to the crossroads with the signpost. Continue straight downhill.

Step 4 : At the T junction, turn right and head downhill towards Tinlhat. Just before the first houses, turn left onto the track. Follow it for 1 km through fields and vineyards to the edge of the Bois du Gros Turluron.

Next step

Step 5 : Follow the path up to the left. Cross a path leading to the ruins of the château (private), then turn left again before descending into a clearing. Continue until you reach a field. Follow the path downhill to the right along the edge of the wood to a crossroads. Continue straight ahead until you reach an intersection.

Step 6 : Turn right, then left 300 m further on to descend towards the D229 (beware of heavy, fast-moving traffic), which you cross to follow the track opposite, which bends to the left. Cross the stream and then the railroad line. At the road, turn right ; follow the agricultural cooperative and, at the chimney, turn left into rue du jeu de boules.

Step 7 : At the end of this street, at Place du Chauffour, turn slightly left into Rue du Mont-Mouchet. Turn right down the allée des Marronniers, cross the bridge over the Angaud stream and continue straight ahead on boulevard de la Porte Neuve. At the stop sign, continue straight ahead on boulevard St-Roch.

Step 8 : At the square, turn left into rue du Faubourg-St-Loup. At the chevet of St-Loup church, turn left down rue St-Loup.

Step 9 : 20 m before the stop sign, pass under the porch on your left to take rue des Cours-Ste-Marie, then the first street on your right ; follow rue du Collège (leaving rue le Peuple on your right) and continue straight ahead to reach the Angaud stream. Cross the stream over the stone bridge and go up rue de l’Etezon.

Step 10 : At the crossroads, continue up the same street towards the medieval quarter. At the top of the street, level with the chevet of the St-Cerneuf church and the Bailli’s house, turn right down the rue des Boucheries. At the end of the medieval quarter, turn left to reach the tourist information office.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

Billom (30 mins from Clermont-Ferrand). Opposite the tourist information office, turn right into rue Carnot. At Place du Vigheot, take Avenue de la Gare straight ahead.
