Route description

The highlight of this hike is the view over the Comté, a Natura 2000 site of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. This forest massif is one of the richest in Auvergne.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the square, with your back to the church, follow the road opposite and, 20 m further on, turn right down the road. At the end of the tarmac, continue down the track opposite (view of the puy de Courdeloup). At the road, turn right. Ignore the right-hand path. In front of the house, follow the road to the right. At the fork, turn right.

Step 2 : Cross the D7 and climb the track opposite. At the crossroads, turn left. Turn left at the crow’s-foot. A few metres further on, turn right (view of Saint-Jean-des-Ollières, puy de Courdeloup on the left and château de Mauzun on the right). At the crossroads, descend to the left (view of the Livradois mountains to the left).

Step 3 : At the entrance to Mas du Bost, turn left. After the cross, descend to the left and, 70 m further on, turn right. Follow the D7 to the right for 30 m and climb the road to the left. 100 m before the quarry gate, go down the path to the right. At the crossroads, turn right. At the road, turn left. Go straight on to Pailler (view of the Sancy massif, Cézallier, Cantal and Livradois mountains).

Step 4 : At the end of the hamlet, turn left down a track. At the crow’s-foot, continue downhill to the left. Keep to the main track as far as Montrouy. Turn left onto the road. At the entrance to Couderchet, stay on the main road, take the footpath to the left and then fork left on the path leading up. At the crow’s feet, turn right. Keep to the main road. At La Garde, take the left-hand path.

Next step

Step 5 : In the next hamlet (on the left, A-R table d’orientation du pic de la Garde : 10 min), go right down between two ruins. At the D253, turn left. At the Saint-Jean-des-Ollières entrance sign, follow a low-walled path to the left. At the wash-house, turn right into the village. At the school, turn left to reach the church.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Billom, take the D997 towards Ambert. After 9 km, turn right on the D7 towards Saint-Jean-des-Ollieres.
