Route description

A hike at an altitude of 1,000 m, with wide, unobstructed views of the Serre plateau, the Sancy massif, Puy d’Alou and the Puys chain. The Gothic church of Le Vernet-Sainte-Marguerite, with its modern frescoes, is of particular interest.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ suivre la D145 en passant devant le gîte. Après le cimetière, emprunter le chemin herbeux à droite (vue sur le vallon des sources Sainte-Marguerite). Cheminer vers le hameau de Cluchat et prendre la route à droite. Descendre jusqu’à la sortie du village (lavoir et four).

Step 2 : Poursuivre sur le chemin en face, qui franchit le ruisseau du Vernet. À l’intersection en T, se diriger à gauche. Laisser le chemin à droite et monter jusqu’au croisement. Bifurquer à droite et rejoindre la D640. La traverser (vue sur le massif du Sancy, le Forez et le puy d’Olloix) et poursuivre jusqu’au carrefour suivant.

Step 3 : Tourner à droite (menhir sur la droite, vue sur le château de Murol et la vallée de Chaudefour). Rester sur le chemin sur environ 1,5 km (vue sur le puy d’Alou et le village du Vernet Sainte-Marguerite) puis virer à droite à 90°. Ignorer le chemin à droite, et monter jusqu’à la D145.

Step 4 : Continuer en face sur le chemin qui longe le puy d’Alou puis tourner à droite jusqu’à la D640. L’emprunter à droite vers Le Vernet Sainte-Marguerite. Obliquer à gauche vers l’église et rejoindre le parking.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Saint-Nectaire (south-west of Clermont-Ferrand), follow the D996 towards Murol, then turn right onto the D145 to Le Vernet Sainte-Marguerite. The start sign is at the end of the village, just before the gîte d’étape.
