Route description

This path was filled with legionnaires watching the adjoining oppidum of Gergovie in 52 BC. Today, it’s an easy walk over sunny terrain. Views over Crest, the Chaîne des Puys, the Gergovie hills and Forez.

Trail highlights

– Caves (under limestone slabs) : wintering habitat for bats.
– View over the Auzon valley and the villages of La Roche-Blanche, Le Crest and Chanonat, dominated by the Serre plateau.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Climb left into the forest. At the end of the plateau (view of Chanonat, the Auzon valley and Montagne de la Serre), continue to a crossroads of 4 paths. Go straight up on the stony track. On the plateau, continue straight ahead until you reach the first road on the right.

Step 2 : Follow it (approx. 350m) to the following intersection

Step 3 : Turn right onto the track. Descend it (with views over the Val d’Allier) to point 1, then return to the starting point by the same path as before.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Clermont-Ferrand, take the A75 towards Montpellier. Take exit n°4, turn right at the 1st traffic lights towards La Roche-Blanche, then Chanonat, then Jussat.
