Route description

Close to Clermont-Ferrand, this trail offers a real change of scenery and a breath of fresh air. Château d’Opme bears witness not only to the area’s medieval past, but also to the stay of Jean de Lattre de Tassigny (Marshal of France).

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Head up rue du maréchal De Lattre De Tassigny towards the château. Go around it via rue des Hautes. Just before the corner of the surrounding wall, turn right onto rue du Chemin des Côtes. Follow the carriageway to a road.

Step 2 : Follow it to the left. Drive alongside the medical center and stay on the main road. After passing the village of Pradet, then a reservoir, continue on the path for 350 meters. Climb to the right towards Puy Giroux. At the edge of the pine forest (viewpoint), take the left-hand path, and 250 m further on, fork right. At the T-junction, go left until you reach a fork.

Step 3 : Climb the path on the right to reach the summit of Puy Giroux (panoramic viewpoint, particularly of the inverted relief of Montagne de la Serre). Take the same route back down to point 2 and continue right towards Opme until you reach the road (point 1). Take the same route to the parking lot as you did on the outward journey.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.
