Route description

A lovely walk in the hushed atmosphere of magnificent forests of fir, beech, maple and hazel. Old farmhouses and mills add interest to the subtle interplay of light and shadow in these beautiful beech-fir forests.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Take the D106 for 50 m, then take the first road on the left downhill towards Daragon. Go through the hamlet of Daragon, and at the end of the hamlet follow the track that rises up opposite. The path leads to a track which you follow to the right for a few metres to rejoin the D106 (view of the Dore valley and Livradois mountains).

Step 2 : Follow the D106 to the left (view of the Forez mountains). Continue up this road. Turn left down the road towards La Borie. 200 m further on, turn right and climb towards La Borie. At the farm, take the right-hand path. At the crossroads, turn right and, 10 m further on, take the left-hand path through the forest. At the crossroads, turn right twice. At the “patte d’oie” (crow’s-foot), keep going up on the left.

Step 3 : In the clearing, at the crossroads, take the path on the right, behind the bench. At the fork, continue downhill to join the D106a. Cross the road and take the path that plunges into the undergrowth opposite. Continue on the main path. At the fork, just before a house, turn right onto the downhill track.

Step 4 : In the village of La Vaisse, at the cross, take the track descending opposite. Cross the stream and, at the crow’s feet, turn right and continue on the same track. Cross the road and take the path opposite. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the track. Continue on the road and return to the start.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

On entering Ambert (coming from Thiers), at the traffic circle, take the D106 (towards Valcivières) ; 3 km further on, at the crossroads with the route de Combrias.
