Route description

Lac de Guéry is the highest lake in Auvergne (1250 m). The surrounding mountains are wild and unspoilt : this area is made up of mountain pastures, offering families the chance to discover beech forests and waterfalls cascading over basalt organs.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, descendre le sentier parallèle à la route jusqu’une fourche au niveau du lac.

Step 2 : Tourner à droite. Au bout du ponton, (vue sur le lac) monter à droite et poursuivre jusqu’à une fourche. Prendre à gauche et monter jusqu’à un carrefour en T. Aller à droite. Au carrefour en T suivant, bifurquer à gauche pour monter en zig-zag (suivre les cordes) dans la forêt (vue sur la cascade) jusqu’à une barrière métallique.

Step 3 : La passer et poursuivre tout droit jusqu’à un escabeau. Le franchir et partir à droite sur un chemin. Le suivre jusqu’à une piste. La traverser, aller en face et continuer jusqu’à un carrefour en T. Aller à droite jusqu’à une fourche. Aller à gauche puis bifurquer une sente à gauche et continuer jusqu’à une fourche.

Step 4 : Prendre la sente de gauche (à droite départ d’un raccourci). Poursuivre la sente (vue sur le lac et le Sancy, les roches Tuillière et Sanadoire, la chaîne des Puys). Continuer et descendre à droite. Avancer dans un bois jusqu’à un croisement et aller en face. Continuer sur un sentier jusqu’à un croisement en T, tourner à droite jusqu’à un grand chemin. Le prendre à gauche sur 50m jusqu’à un carrefour (à droite, arrivée du raccourci).

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

From Le Mont-Dore take the D986 towards Clermont-Ferrand, then left on the D983 to the Col de Guéry. Parking at the pass.
