Route description

A walk around a volcanic reservoir that is ideal for canoeing, sailing, fishing and swimming. A variant climbs the Tartaret volcano, from where you can admire the Dent du Marais volcanic cliffs and the Sancy massif.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : At the footbridge, opposite the lake, take the right-hand path, leaving the lake on your left, as far as the road (view of Dent du Marais).

Step 2 : Turn left along a parapet wall to the “plage Chambon-sur-Lac” and parking area.

Step 3 : Go round the parking lot to the left, along the campsite, leaving it on the right (view of the Sancy massif and the Chaudefour valley), continue to the first crossroads. Turn left over the pontoons. Cross the couze de Chaudefour (view of Murol castle and Tartaret) and continue to a T-junction.

Step 4 : Turn left along the lake as far as “plage Murol”, which you cross on a green lane. Reach the parking lot by crossing the bridge over the couze Chambon.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Clermont-Ferrand, take the D2089 towards Tulle / Bordeaux.
At the Col de la Ventouse, turn left towards Murol on the D213, then right on the D5 to the Murol roundabout. Take the D996 towards Lac Chambon as far as the traffic circle. Turn left, direction “Plage Est”.
