Route description

A beautiful little loop offering magnificent panoramic views of the Sancy volcanoes and the Livradois mountains. You’ll discover an ancient Roman road, the Deux Frères belvedere in the village of Echandelys, as well as a cross and a castle (private).

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Take the D39 towards Sauxillanges, then the 2nd street on the right opposite the town hall. Follow the small square and turn left onto the footpath. At the end of the track, turn right and follow the D39. Pass “Le Moulin Neuf” and take the first dirt track on the right. At the crossroads, go straight on towards the village of Cher.

Step 2 : At the entrance to the village, fork right at the first road and follow a tarmac track. At the first house, turn right at the crow’s-foot to join the D264 ; turn left for 200 m. Turn right towards Buisson. At the last building in the hamlet, turn left onto a grassy path. Follow it, turning right at the crow’s feet to join a farm track which you take on the right.

Step 3 : At the road, turn left immediately onto the path that climbs up, avoiding the hamlet. Continue as far as Fiosson. At the entrance to the village, turn left onto a steep track. After 300 m, turn right at the crow’s-foot, then right at the intersection with the Roman road (a wide track) until you reach the D59, which you cross.

Step 4 : Follow this wide track ; 200 m from the crossroads, fork right to “Les 2 Frères”.cross the hamlet (off-course lookout to be seen), following the signs. Turn left onto a grassy path alongside a farm. At the bottom of the descent, turn right. Go straight ahead for 100 m at the crossroads. Continue as far as La Cibeaudie.

Next step

Step 5 : Cross the village and take the grassy path downhill. At the bottom, fork right towards La Foresterie. In the village, turn left onto the asphalt road as far as the junction with the D264. Turn right to reach Echandelys.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine, take the D996 towards Ambert. After less than a kilometer, turn right onto the D39 towards Saint-Eloy la Glacière. After 4km, continue towards Saint Eloy la Glacière. Go through this village and continue straight on towards Echandelys. The start sign is on the church square in Echandelys.
