Route description

A loop along the cool, shady Sioule, including the beautiful Montfermy waterfall, ideal for a family break, and the village’s Romanesque church, with its early 14th-century frescoes, well worth a visit.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Cross the bridge over the Sioule. Turn left up the stairs into the village. At the cross, turn right, go around the church to the left and down the road to the D418. Turn left for 500 m, overhanging the river, to the “La Garde” sign.

Step 2 : Turn left up the road. At the right-hand bend, take the left-hand path down to the stream, cross it and climb right to the summit (view of Montfermy church). Descend to the river and walk along it to the wooden footbridge.

Step 3 : Cross the Sioule and climb to the bridge above the waterfall. Follow the path to the left and, at the crossroads, continue left to the starting point.

CAUTION – The path is uneven, with tricky sections (large stones) on certain sections of the route.

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

Head towards Pontgibaud (D941). At the crossroads after the Pontgibaud roundabout, turn right towards Montfermy on the D418. Car park on the left before the bridge, at the entrance to Montfermy
