Route description

From Arconsat, one of the oldest villages in Forez, this circuit of forest tracks leads to the fascinating viewpoint of Montlune and its funerary tomb. Panoramic views of the Forez mountains, Limagne, Chaîne des Puys and Sancy.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the village of Arconsat, at the crossroads between the D64 and D86 (parking lot below), take the D64 towards Croix Saint-Martin. Follow the asphalt road to the D324.

Step 2 : Just before the D324, take a rising road to the left. Stay on the main road for 500 m. At the next 2 crow’s feet, turn right onto the tracks and continue to the village of “Le Bost”. Cross the village and continue on the tarmac road. Turn left at the first fork in the road, and just after the house, take a track rising slightly to the left. Keep to the main path as far as Col Saint-Thomas.

Step 3 : At the pass, head for the “refuge” on the left. From here, continue up the main path. At the “patte-d’oie”, after 500 m, take the right-hand path and continue to climb along the main path. Before you reach the Montlune plateau, at the crow’s-foot, take the path that climbs to the left to the crossroads of forest tracks. Return to the Montlune rock by taking the path opposite (view of the Forez mountains, Limagne plain, Chaîne des Puys, Massif du Sancy, Mont-Dore).

Step 4 : Turn right onto the wide track (view of the Laprugne wind turbines). Follow it to the crossroads of 4 paths. Take the left-hand path, which bends into a hairpin.

Step 5 : Continue downhill on this main track. At the crossroads of 5 paths, take the second path on the right, then pass Rocher du Coq. Continue downhill on the main path until you reach the “Carrefour de la Vierge”.

Step 6 : Take the left-hand path down to the Arconsat cemetery. Take the road on the right and go down the first asphalt road on the left. After 50 m, take a grassy path down to the right. At the asphalt road, turn left to pass the church and return to the parking lot.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.
