Route description

Discover the basalt organs of the Essarts waterfall.This short, family-friendly walk through meadows and forests offers fine views of the Sancy massif.

Hidden in the undergrowth, the Essarts waterfall is first heard, then discovered amid lush vegetation. The water of the La Gagne river flows over basalt columns into a basin covered with rocks and stones, before continuing down the stream.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Depuis la place de l’église, descendez par la rue de la Mairie, qui passe entre la maison du tourisme et la Mairie, puis continuez tout droit le long de la route.

Step 2 : Après avoir passé une première intersection à 400 m, tournez à droite à la seconde à 800 m, direction Le Mont.

Step 3 : Tournez à droite juste avant de rentrer dans le hameau du Mont. Suivez ce chemin sur 800 m.

Step 4 : Tournez à gauche pour faire un aller-retour jusqu’à la cascade des Essarts.

Step 5 : Revenez sur le chemin principal et prenez à gauche. Restez bien à droite à l’intersection suivante à 80 m. Continuez sur 700 m jusqu’à la route.

Step 8 : Prenez à gauche et revenez par la route empruntée à l’aller pour rejoindre le bourg de Chastreix.

Bring hiking boots, or even snowshoes in case of heavy snow.
Remember to wear 3 layers of clothing, as the trail runs through undergrowth.
Not suitable for baby carriages.
