Route description
The Via Allier cycle route continues to cross the former mining basin and enters the Haute-Loire at Sainte-Florine. Along the Livradois foothills, the cycle route crosses the Limagne brivadoise.
Without losing sight of the river, which meanders through farmland, this stage is dotted with hilltop villages steeped in history. Auzon, Azérat and Lamothe reveal their medieval treasures – Romanesque chapels and paintings, priories and ancient fortifications – to those who dare to make the detour. Brioude and its Basilique(…)

● Sainte-Florine : church with altarpiece and 18th-century statue of Saint Jacques. 15th-century square tower with murals.
● Auzon : medieval village classified as a “Petite cité de caractère”. 12th-century collegiate church with Romanesque Christ and 14th- and 16th-century murals. Castle (private), old market hall, gate and ramparts.
● Azérat : former priory and 12th-century church with murals.
● Lamothe : fortified medieval village. Castle (private). Former center of inland waterway transport on the Allier at Cougeac. Méandre de Pré-Caillé classified as a Sensitive Natural Area.
● Brioude : “Plus Beaux Détours de France” and “Ville et métiers d’art” labels. Basilique Saint-Julien : largest Romanesque church in Auvergne, built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Dogs allowed It is possible to travel with a pet transported in a luggage unit. But while it’s tempting to consider having your dog run alongside your bike, this won’t be possible everywhere : it will often have to be kept on a leash and transported on sections of the route shared with motorized traffic (still the majority on the Via Allier). Dogs may not be allowed on certain departmental cycle paths or greenways. In France, by law, dogs must be kept on a leash on public roads and in public places, on pain of a 1st class fine (up to €38 ; category 3 dogs), or a 2nd class fine (up to €150 ; category 1 – attack – and 2 – defense or guard – dogs must be muzzled). Not all accommodations accept pets. If they do, a supplement and proof of vaccination may be required. Dogs are not allowed in grocery stores or on certain beaches along the river Allier in summer.
