Little is known about the history of this castle. Despite extensive research, its construction date and origins remain a mystery to this day, but it is estimated to have been built around 1550.
The château is a crossroads between a medieval fortress and a large rural residence.
Since the 16th century, the château has had a succession of owners, leaving behind their share of legends, rebuilding, destruction, abandonment and discoveries. A complex genealogy that still leaves some uncertainties and enigmas as to the real history of this estate. From Catherine de Médicis, through Jean de la Guesle, squire to Jean Stuart Comte d’Auvergne, to the De Tane, De Nevrezé and Jean Baptiste Guyot-Lavaline families… the estate’s rich history deserves to be told.

The château consists of a massive main building flanked by four large circular towers. The interior and exterior decor feature many architectural elements inspired by the Italian Renaissance: facade, vaulted rooms, staircase in the ancient tradition…

After several centuries of neglect, passionate volunteers from the ARCM (Association Renaissance de La Chaux Montgros) have been working since the 1970s to save this building, which was classified as a Historic Monument in 2000. It recently received the support of the Stéphane Bern Mission and the Fondation du Patrimoine to restore it to its former glory.
Every year, the château opens its doors for regular guided tours, and for events such as the Journées Européennes du Patrimoine (European Heritage Days), château walks and other live entertainment events.
