This castle was the seat of a seigniory that appeared in the late 10th or early 11th century ; the de Bréon family occupied an important place among Auvergne’s noble families in the Middle Ages.

From the motte, the landscape is open and the view exceptional. It offers a 360° panorama of the Lac des Bordes, the Massif du Sancy and the Monts du Cantal. The summit is easily accessible from the village of Brion.

The site also owes its fame to its fairground, which groups together several burons and has been the site of traditional livestock fairs since the 17th century. These fairs take place on a fixed date each year. While the most popular is the August 22 fair, others take place between early May and late October.
