Motte castrale of Giat

Giat

The biggest and best preserved motte (raised area of ground from a motte and bailey castle) in the Auvergne with a height of 12m. It was erected in the 11th century at the command of an Auvergnat Count. A wooden tower of which there are no traces left , would have risen from it’s summit.

A heritage guide is available for €3 in our four tourist information offices : Saint-Gervais-d’Auvergne, Châteauneuf-les-Bains, Pontgibaud and Les Ancizes-Comps, as well as on our online shop. It provides information about the castle mound, a former fortified site, and its role in the medieval organisation of the area.
