A powerful fortress, capital of “Dauphiné d’Auvergne” during two centuries, used to rise at the summit of peak around which the village of Vodable is wrapping. “Vodable, Ybois, Nonette and Usson, the four gateways to Auvergne are” proclamed then a proud dictum.

When Auvergne was divided between the 2 branches of the Count’s family, Robert II, who first called himself Dauphin d’Auvergne, transferred his main residence to Champeix and then to Vodable.
