Route description

A circuit near the village of Volvic, on the edge of the Limagne fault and at the foot of the volcanoes of the Puys chain.This mid-mountain area (800 m) offers views of the volcanoes (Jumes, Coquille,…) and the rich crops of the Limagne.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, s’engager en sous-bois ; suivre la grande allée sur 2,3 km, en ignorant les chemins latéraux, jusqu’à une fourche située dans une clairière à l’extrémité d’une prairie.

Step 2 : Partir à gauche. Laisser un chemin montant à gauche puis, aux deux intersections suivantes, se diriger à gauche. À la fourche, aller à droite pour rejoindre la D90, à l’entrée du village d’Égaules.

Step 3 : Emprunter la route à gauche sur 50 m, puis descendre à droite la rue des Grands Prés. Au croisement après les dernières maisons, partir à droite. À l’intersection en T, tourner à gauche puis, à la fourche, prendre à droite. Bifurquer à gauche et descendre dans un chemin creux. Poursuivre en ignorant des sentes de part et d’autre jusqu’à une intersection.

Step 4 : Monter à gauche et longer la voie ferrée sur 1 km. Le chemin s’infléchit ensuite sur la gauche (vue sur la chaîne des Puys). Continuer tout droit jusqu’à la D90.

Step 5 : La suivre à droite sur 150 m. Au croisement avec la D943, quitter la route et monter à gauche. À l’intersection, emprunter à droite l’itinéraire suivi à l’aller, et rejoindre le point de départ.

Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

North-west of Clermont-Ferrand, between Volvic and Pontgibaud, at “Le Cratère”, at the intersection of the D986 and D943, follow the latter for 100 m. Parking on the median strip.
