Culminating at 781 meters, the puy Saint-Romain is the highest point on the banks of the Limagne, offering superb 360° views. It’s also a famous historical site, with a priory and chapel surrounded by a field of Merovingian burials.
– Puy Saint-Romain.
– 360° viewpoint with orientation table.
Étape 1 : From the start sign, walk past the village hall up to a crossroads. Turn left onto rue de la Liberté, follow it for ten metres or so, then turn right onto a wide grassy path (cross) to a tarmac road. Follow it to the left and cross the road. Continue straight ahead, then turn left into Rue de l’Ecole. In the square (wash-house), turn right up rue de Saint Romain to the water well near the last houses.
Étape 2 : Climb a track on the right and, at a fork in the road, continue uphill on the left. At the crossroads (stone cross), go straight on to a Canadian crossing. Leave the main path and climb left along a grassy track to a path (signposted AR to the summit).
Étape 3 : Climb to the right and, after a scree slope, go left for ten metres or so until you reach a track. Follow this to the left as far as the summit (360° viewpoint, with orientation and landscape table) and descend by the same route as far as the AR sign and go right as far as the T intersection.
Étape 4 : Go left. At a small clearing, turn right. Stay on the track, ignoring the footpaths, and fork left onto a small path which becomes stony and uneven. At the junction with a wide track, turn right as far as a T-junction (other PRs on the right).
Étape 5 : Turn left. At the bottom of the valley, ignore the adjacent paths and continue towards the village of Saint-Maurice. Cross a bridge and continue straight ahead. At the end of Rue de la Guelle, turn right. At the fountain, turn left into rue de la Liberté, then right into chemin du Port to return to the starting point.
