Route description

The vastness of this pond inspires calm and reverie. An observatory makes the area ideal for discovering the flora and fauna, particularly migratory birds. The pond is also a favourite meeting place for pike anglers.

Trail highlights

The 132-hectare Etang Chancelade is the largest pond in the Puy-de-Dôme department. It is fed by several small streams and brooklets. The overflow from the pond gives rise to the Chancelade stream, which is a sub-tributary of the Sioulet (and therefore of the Sioule) via the Chevalet. It has a capacity of around 2,500,000 m3 and a water height of between 5 and 6 metres. It is mainly used by anglers. The pond and its surroundings are part of a wild and preserved site (Z.N.I.E.F.F).

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Aller jusqu’à l’étang et partir à droite sur le sentier longeant la berge. Laisser un chalet en rondins sur la droite, passer deux pontons d’observation et aller jusqu’à une passerelle.

Step 2 : La traverser et continuer le chemin qui s’éloigne de l’étang, franchir une barrière, poursuivre après la sortie du bois jusqu’à un carrefour en T. Prendre à gauche pour atteindre le village de Troissagnes. Dans le hameau, descendre à gauche et, à la sortie, emprunter le chemin à gauche. À 250 m, prendre le chemin de droite et le suivre jusqu’à une croix dans un carrefour.

Step 3 : Tourner à gauche et poursuivre pendant 2 km en restant à gauche jusqu’au village de Malganne. Le traverser en restant à gauche ; 200 m après la sortie du village, prendre un chemin montant à gauche. Le suivre jusqu’à un ruisseau qu’on longe sur quelques mètres avant de le traverser à gué. Continuer jusqu’à une fourche (croix). Descendre à gauche, rejoindre un large chemin dans un virage ; l’emprunter à gauche jusqu’à la route D13. Partir à gauche pour rejoindre le point de départ.

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.
