Route description

This route takes you to the ruins of the Chartreuse du Port-Sainte-Marie, founded in 1219, via the banks of the meandering Sioule.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the start sign, take the Chemin des Creux. Continue along this path, keeping to the left until you reach an intersection.

Step 2 : Turn right down the track (view of the meandering Sioule). Continue downhill through the woods, keeping to the left until you reach La Sioule. Follow it to the ruins (Chartreuse du Port-Sainte-Marie).

Step 3 : Take the path opposite the main entrance (signs). At the next crossroads, continue uphill on the left to reach the road. Follow the road to the left, and after 200 m, take a path that descends to the left. Cross over a stream, then walk alongside it before heading up into the woods. At the fork, take the narrow path to the right and continue uphill, keeping to the right until you reach the road.

Step 4 : Cross the road and take the path opposite, straight ahead to an intersection. Turn left down the track. When you reach the road, opposite the cross, turn left down Rue de la Chartreuse and return to the starting point.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

At Pontgibaud, head for Saint-Ours-les-Roches on the D941b, then the D943. At Saint-Ours, turn left towards Les Ancizes. At Les Ancizes, take the D61 towards La Chartreuse de Port-Sainte-Marie. Parking lot on the median on the right just before the Les Ancizes exit sign.
