In a natural setting, discover the Port Sainte Marie Carthusian monastery, which still preserves the peaceful atmosphere specific to this type of monastery. As you explore its remains, you’ll discover the very special organization of a Carthusian monastery, where hermit monks lived as a community. Thanks to its untouched medieval layers, the site offers archaeological potential of the utmost importance for understanding the evolution of Carthusian architecture. It is for this very reason that the site has been listed as a historic monument. A QR code can be used to explore the site independently in the absence of volunteers.

Founded in 1219, the Port Sainte Marie Carthusian monastery has played an important role in the economic and cultural history of the Combrailles region and Limagne for over five centuries. Abandoned at the time of the French Revolution, its possessions were scattered, in particular in neighboring churches (Manzat, Pontgibaud).

For over forty years, the Friends of the Port Ste Marie Carthusian Monastery association has been safeguarding and enhancing the site through volunteer work and by promoting artistic, cultural and heritage activities.
Every year, cultural and artistic projects are initiated. In particular, children from schools in the Combrailles region work with visual artists to create artistic productions that are installed on the site during the summer months. A short story competition and an art competition are also offered.

From Easter to All Saints’ Day, a play area called “le ludoparc de la chartreuse” is set up in the heart of the monument, offering old-fashioned games or games related to the site’s flora and fauna, a book box, and step-by-step watercolour desks.
In July and August, the association’s volunteers offer guided tours every Thursday from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm, and on Sunday afternoons, to help visitors discover the site and its heritage and natural setting. On request, tours can be organized for groups throughout the year.
For schools and other educational establishments, the association offers tours and workshops during the summer months, and makes educational tools available on the association’s website. Projects that can benefit from the Culture Pass
Special tours and activities can also be organized for specific target groups : early childhood, disabled people, social centers, EHPAD, senior citizens’ clubs, etc. Please contact the association.
Visits can be complemented by hikes combining the discovery of the heritage and the natural environment of the Sioule valley.
