Route description

A forest tour of a key site in the French Resistance : the ‘Nestor Perret’ maquis. Leader of the Clermont-Ferrand Resistance, he was shot by the Gestapo in 1943 without having spoken. Views of the Chaîne des Puys and the Combrailles.

– Saint-Julien-la-Geneste church : 17th-century statue, tabernacle and high altar ; beautiful Irish yew tree in the church square.
– Off the route : Nestor-Perret maquis (commemorative stele) ; straight on after Pracos, butte de Montagar (exceptional viewpoint over the Combrailles) ; after the church on the way back, take a path on the left (signposted) to the beautiful Saint-Blaise fountain.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Du panneau de départ, descendre la D18 et, juste après le pont, prendre le chemin à droite. Dans la montée, tourner au 1er chemin à droite longeant la ligne téléphonique et poursuivre jusqu’à l’entrée du hameau. Le Bois du Mas. Tourner immédiatement à droite et poursuivre jusqu’à un croisement en T dans le bois.

Step 2 : Aller à droite et au croisement suivant, en sortie de bois, prendre le chemin à gauche. Longer le bois et rejoindre la route dans un virage. L’emprunter en face, en direction du Maquis Nestor Perret. Au hameau de l’Etubeix, monter à gauche dans le bois, toujours en direction du site de la Résistance. À la fourche dans la descente (hors circuit à droite : le site de la Résistance), continuer en face jusqu’à un grand croisement dans les bois de Pionsat.

Step 3 : Partir à droite et poursuivre tout droit, en ignorant les chemins transversaux, jusqu’à une grande clairière. La traverser et prendre le large chemin à droite. Continuer tout droit jusqu’à un croisement en T.

Step 4 : Descendre à droite. Poursuivre sur le chemin principal jusqu’à un croisement de quatre chemins. Prendre le sentier à gauche entre les haies qui monte en direction de Pracos. À la route, partir à gauche et entrer dans le hameau. À la fourche, descendre à droite le long d’une grange. Après le petit bois de sapins, dans la remontée, tourner à droite sur un chemin, et poursuivre jusqu’à la route.

Step 5 : La prendre à droite, et à la sortie d’un virage, emprunter à gauche –en rétrograde– le premier petit chemin bordé de haies. À la fourche, tourner à droite et aller jusqu’à un croisement en T. Emprunter à gauche un large chemin, traverser le bois (en sortie de bois, vue sur les Combrailles et la Chaîne des Puys). 200 m après, tourner à droite sur un chemin, aller jusqu’à la route. La prendre à droite, traverser le hameau Chez Pezant et poursuivre tout droit. Passer près de l’église (statue du XVIIe, tabernacle, if d’Irlande planté par La Fayette) pour rejoindre le point de départ.

Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Menat, north-east of Riom on the D2144, head for Saint-Éloy as far as La Boule, then turn left on the D987 towards St- Gervais. After Teilhet, take the D18 towards Gouttières, as far as St Julien-la-Geneste.
