Route description

A magnificent itinerary, in the heart of the glacial valley of Le Fossat, classified as a Sensitive Natural Area, via the Rochers de la Pause and its exceptional panoramas over the Hautes-Chaumes du Forez and the mountains to the west, from the Alps to the Sancy.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : Dans l’épingle de la D 255, 1 km après le col de Chansert, à Pré-Daval (chaos granitique), suivre la piste qui pénètre dans la vallée. Au niveau du jas du Fossat, emprunter le chemin en face le long du ruisseau de Vertolaye. Au moment de franchir le ruisseau, suivre le sentier à droite qui grimpe fortement en sous-bois. Garder toujours ce même sentier, traverser le ruisseau et rejoindre la croix du Fossat (vue sur les vallées du Fossat et des Reblats).

Step 2 : Monter le sentier le plus à droite en longeant la clôture. Emprunter l’escabeau pour rentrer dans le parc (jasseries sur la gauche) ; monter tout droit pour en franchir un second. Au niveau du jas en ruine, continuer à droite ; traverser une zone de tourbière et poursuivre dans la lande à callunes et myrtilles.

Step 3 : Aux rochers de la Pause (vue sur Pierre-sur-Haute à droite), descendre tout droit. Passer un nouvel escabeau et continuer sur un chemin à droite (vue sur la chaîne des Puys et le massif du Sancy à gauche). À l’orée du bois, passer l’escabeau et descendre par le chemin forestier en face.

Step 4 : À la sortie d’un virage à gauche, sur le replat, emprunter une sente à droite descendant dans la forêt (prudence, terrain accidenté). Garder le sentier le plus marqué plongeant dans la vallée. Passer sous un affleurement rocheux, emprunter la passerelle et rejoindre la même piste qu’à l’aller ; la suivre à gauche pour rejoindre le point de départ.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From the village of Job, turn left on the D66 (towards St-Pierre-la-Bourlhonne), then right on the D255 (towards Col du Chansert). At Col du Chansert, continue on the D255 for 1 km. At Pré-Daval, beside a granite chaos.
