Route description

From the Ussel plateau, you can see the couzes and Dore mountains, and the beautiful village of Malnon. A visit to the nearby Cistercian abbey of Mégemont, founded in 1206, is not to be missed. A beautiful tour.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

Step 1 : From the start sign, join the cemetery, then turn left onto the D23 to the village of Pouchenirgue.

Step 2 : After the wash-house, turn right and continue straight ahead on this tarmac track until you reach the road. Turn left, then take the first turning on the right. After the big right-hand bend, go down, ignoring the two paths on the left (view of the Sancy massif, the Brionnet peak with the Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel chapel and the Puy de Dôme), until you reach the crossroads.

Step 3 : Take the wide right-hand path up to the Ussel plateau. At the T-junction, turn right and follow the road to the left. Leave the road for the first track on the left and climb up to the crossroads. Fork right and descend (view of Monts du Livradois and Forez) to the T-junction. Turn right to descend to the D23. Follow it to the left, then turn right onto the small road that leads to Chassagne. Drive through the village (church and side-gabled house with redents) to reach the starting point.

Additional information

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access

From Perrier (west of Issoire), leave the D996 for the D26 towards Saint-Floret. After 2 km, take the D23 towards Tourzel and continue to the village of Chassagne. At the cemetery, turn left to park in front of the Monument aux Morts.
