Route description
The Chemin des Muletiers, used since ancient times, is the shortest route to the summit of Puy de Dôme, but also the most challenging. There are two possible variants, starting from the Col de Ceyssat (50 min) or from the Maison de Site (2 h 15).
The Muleteers’ path, starting from the Maison de Site (approx. 2 h 15 for a distance of 6 km) 1. Go up from the parking lot to join the small tarmac road. Keep right for 300 m until you reach the Puy de Dôme service road barrier (former toll booth),

At this crossroads, turn left onto a yellow signposted path towards Col de Ceyssat (PR du tour du puy de Dôme), 3. After approx. 500 m, cross the RD 68 and follow the yellow PR signs through the Rochetoux woods to the Col de Ceyssat. 4. At the Col de Ceyssat, join the Auberge des Muletiers at the top of the parking lot to take the GR441 to the summit of the Puy de Dôme.
Le chemin des Muletiers from Col de Ceyssat (approx. 50 min for a distance of 1.9 km): WARNING: During busy periods, it is often difficult to park in the Col de Ceyssat parking lot. What’s more, parking along the RD 68 is not permitted. We advise you to choose the long option and leave your vehicle at the Maison de Site parking lot.
1. From the Col de Ceyssat parking lot, near the Auberge des Muletiers at the top of the parking lot, take the GR 441 towards the summit of the Puy de Dôme (red and white markings). 2. Yaw up the 365 m ascent to the summit of the puy de Dôme.
