A hike between Saint-Hyppolyte, Douhady and Enval in the heart of the Enval gorges carved out by the Ambène river. From the puy de Paugnat and the hill of Montaclier, magnificent panoramas over the Limagne, Riom, Forez and the castles of Tournoël and Chazeron.

Step 1 : From the start sign at the entrance to the parking lot, take the D455 towards St-Hippolyte. Turn left and follow rue du Terme. Leaving rue de l’Aubépine, turn right for 50 m and go straight ahead on chemin du Verger Creux. At the fork in the road, turn left to reach the church.
Step 2 : Turn right onto route de Volvic. At the square, turn left. At the crossroads, turn left ; at Place des Templiers (sculpted cross), go straight ahead and after 20 m, turn right down the grassy path. Turn left onto the D455 and, after the bridge, turn left onto Chemin des Ecoliers, then opposite, Chemin des Coteaux. At the T-junction, go downhill for 20 m, then turn left onto rue du Chalet, then left again onto chemin des Gîtes. At the fork, turn right into the woods. At the crossroads, turn right (view of Chazeron castle). At the crossroads, go straight ahead to the cross in the center of the hamlet of Douhady.
Step 3 : Turn left onto route du Calvaire, then rue des Pradoux. At the intersection, go straight ahead. At the crossroads, go down to the left (view of the Puy de Dôme and the Chaîne des Puys). Continue, keeping to the right twice. At the fork, take the first path on the left to the road ; follow it to the right for 20 m, then leave it on the left to go through the village of Facemeunier. At the crossroads at the exit, go straight ahead, then downhill to the right. After the drinking trough, go straight on. At the fork, go left ; cross the wood, ignoring a path on the left (at the end of the wood : view of Montaclier). At the intersection, go left to a fork (pond) in the hamlet of Beauvaleix.
Step 4 : Turn right down the dead-end road. Follow the aviaries and continue straight ahead through the woods. Go down to the D15, cross it (caution : dangerous crossing) and turn right onto a small track. Cross the Ambène and follow the Rue des Gorges on the left bank. At the drinking trough, turn left into rue de la République ; at the fountain, continue straight ahead. Leave the road and enter the lane between the barns. Pass through undergrowth. At the crossroads, go straight up the road. At the T-junction, turn right onto chemin de la Bigue. At the crossroads, turn left onto chemin des Pias, then immediately right to the start sign.

Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Access
From Riom’s west ring road, follow signs for Mozac, then Châtel-Guyon and Saint-Hippolyte. Park in the stadium parking lot (next to La Croze campsite).
