After a descent to Roddias, a long, unshaded climb leads to the road linking Courpière to Ambert. The route then alternates between undergrowth and open country before reaching Sauviat, with its panoramic view of the dam. Bypassing Cublas, hikers are offered a fine view of the Dore gorges. A rapid descent leads to the river, then along the railway line built between 1883 and 1902. After passing through Giroux-Vieux and climbing to Lavest, the route crosses the Faye valley before reaching Lac d’Aubusson. Two final climbs complete this demanding route before returning to the nature center.
