It retraces the history of the lake and the many legends that have fuelled the collective imagination about its origins. Using videos, sound bubbles, an aquarium and digital microscopes, the exhibition takes stock of scientific data and advances in terms of volcanism, presents the composition of the lake and life in the water, mentioning the fish and microorganisms that inhabit the lake, while rock samples retrace the geological history of this exceptional lake.
Designed in collaboration with teacher-researchers and CNRS researchers.
This summer 2026, the commune of Besse is hosting an exhibition on “Water at the heart of science”, on loan from the Conseil Départemental du Puy-de-Dôme.
Water is one of the major challenges of the 21st century. Abundant on Earth, but unevenly distributed, this resource is now threatened by climate change and the risks of overexploitation. Its economic, social, environmental and cultural value calls for sustainable management based on solidarity. Improving access to water, which still suffers from glaring inequalities, is one of the Millennium Development Goals.
