There are five main areas on the site: woodland, backwaters, agricultural wasteland, riverbank plant assemblages and two “streams” framing the marsh to the north and south.
Set back from the urban and agricultural hustle and bustle of the surrounding area, the site is ideally suited to the preservation of flora and fauna.
There are 200 plant species, including some rare and heritage species, 153 bird species, 37 species of odonata and around 44 species of butterfly.
Some of these species are protected, including the Reed Bunting (bird), the Clover Azure (butterfly) and the Barley-grass Sedge (plant).
Access to the marsh: direct access from the “EDF suez” parking lot via the D420 as you leave Gerzat, with the poplar grove on your right. From this parking lot, a discovery trail is mapped on the site entrance sign.
