Traditionally, women spent the summer in the jasserie ; they were responsible for tending the herd and making Fourme d’Ambert cheese. The Jasserie du Coq Noir, built entirely of stone and thatched, is beautifully preserved. Although the interior has been redesigned, the former barn and cheese cellar are clearly distinguishable on the ground floor. Upstairs, a museum space under the thatched roof teaches you more about daily life at the jasserie. Attractive display cases explain the unique way summer pastures operated in the Haut-Forez region. Push open one of its heavy doors and step into the private life of a family spending the summer in the pastures at the turn of the century.
